Field Trips
This year, we’re offering field trips before and after the symposium. You do not need to register for the symposium to attend these field trips; however, due to safety and liability reasons, you must be a member of AHS.

Flagstaff Water Resources & Upper Lake Mary Paired Watersheds
and Cost: $50 Member and $40 Student member

Join us Wednesday before the Annual Meeting and Ice Breaker Reception for a tour of the Walnut Creek Watershed, where geo-ecohydrology meets water resources development with topics including the growth of the Lake Mary fault systems, with Dr. Jeri Young Ben-Horin of the Arizona Geological Survey, structural geology and aquifer yield studies with Errol Montgomery, water supply and hydrology with Erin Young and Matthew Miller of City of Flagstaff Water Services, and watershed health and the Upper Lake Mary Paired Watershed research projects presented by Dr. Abe Springer of Northern Arizona University. We meet at the Drury Hotel at 9:15 AM and hop in a van field school style for a 9:30 AM departure. Lunch is provided. Bring water and sturdy footwear/outdoor clothing appropriate for hiking two-miles round trip on a forest service road, with some walking across semi-rocky native forest, and as appropriate for the Flagstaff weather in September (perfect and temperate, but potentially rainy and windy). We will have you back to the Drury at 3:30 PM in time for the 4 PM AHS Annual Meeting across the street at the High Country Conference Center.
Extend your stay in the cool pines by participating in one of our Saturday field trips. Friday night camp out at Dogtown Lake Campground in Williams, Arizona and join us for a river-kitchen style dinner followed by fireside (weather-permitting) networking. Not a big tent camper? We have room blocks available at the Drury Inn for the weekend! Off-site participants will join us no later than 8:50 AM for departure from Dogtown Lake Campground. You’ll pack your lunch before two incredible trips depart Dogtown Lake Campground on Saturday morning; one led by Erin Young, City of Flagstaff, exploring the Williams-area water resources, reservoirs, and wells.
Pack your boots and plenty of water for Option #2, with multiple moderate and slightly technical hikes (approximately 4 miles total) to Williams-area springs, waterfalls, and other neat hydrologic features. Enjoy an overview of the paired watershed studies, springs ecology and restoration, and Williams regional hydrogeology presented by Dr. Abe Springer (NAU) and Zachary Keller (SRP). Wrap up the day with dinner at Historic Brewing Company (*dinner not included in trip cost*) before retiring back to Dogtown Lake Campground for another evening under the stars.
